Inspired by Alaska's First People, Claire's (1920-1998) bold, intuitive canvases
capture daily life and rugged self-reliance in an unforgiving arctic. She was
raised in Depression-ear Brooklyn, where she trained as a sculptor and painter.
A war bride, she and husband Joe Fejes sought adventure and fortune in the far
north, making their home in Fairbanks, Alaska for over fifty years. Claire found
her passion and artistic purpose in Alaska's smallest villages and hunting
camps. Her paintings, made over five decades and capturing a way of life few
people on earth experience today, are collected worldwide.
Claire's books, limited edition prints, sketches, watercolors and oils are
featured at the Alaska House Art Gallery in Fairbanks. |
