Born and raised on a farm in
Michigan, Debbie moved to Alaska in 1982. In 1986, she had the opportunity to learn
traditional Haida basket weaving from master weaver Delores Churchill, including traditional
harvesting of basketry materials and grasses to decorate them. She was also mentored by Holly
Churchill, April Varnell, Diane Douglas-Willard, and the late, great Grace Dewitt.
Debbie's baskets and hats have been recognized with
honors in art shows from Ketchikan to Anchorage. Her work was selected for showing in the
"all juried" art show, "Earth, Fire and Fiber" in 1991 and again in 1995.
Her work can be found in private collections across the United States, Canada, Australia,
Germany, Austria and the British Isles. Debbie and her husband live in Juneau, harvesting
their food and basketry materials from the wilds of Alaska.
Taku Graphics distributes Debbie's cards of photos
(by Marilyn Holmes) of her woven baskets and hats. |
