Born and raised in Chicago, Dick worked as a linotype operator for a printing
company before driving his '38 Nash to Alaska in 1949. After a year with the
Alaska Railroad at McKinley Park, he attended the University of Alaska,
Fairbanks earning a degree in Civil Engineering, and also developed an interest
in Alaskan art and oil painting.
While serving in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at
Elmendorf Air Force Base, he traveled to many remote areas before moving to
Southeastern, Alaska in 1959. Following two years as a structural engineer with
the U.S. Coast Guard in Juneau, he went into private practice as a consulting
structural engineer for about thirty years, specializing in building design.
Dick married Sheila MacSpadden from Juneau while in
college in 1953. They have four children and reside in both Tenakee Springs and
Juneau. |
